Neighborhood Spotlight: La Jolla

It’s appropriate that the coastal town of La Jolla is nicknamed “Jewel City” — this area really is a gem in San Diego, with its beautiful beaches, Mediterranean architecture, lush nature, and incredible history of being home to numerous actors, musicians, and even Dr. Seuss. Check out our guide to spending a day in this charming seaside enclave.

Visit the Seals

Since 1992, La Jolla has been home to a thriving population of seals and sea lions that frolic in a swimming area built for children (just four miles from the hotel). Hang out by the seawall and watch them at play between December and May, which is adorable “pupping season.” Or, come between May and December, when visitors are permitted to stroll along the adjacent beach.

Picnic at Ellen Browning Scripps Park

Discover the expansive ocean vistas that have helped make Ellen Browning Scripps Park (four miles from the hotel) San Diego’s most photographed site, according to AAA — perhaps by having a picnic with a basket from Pacific Terrace. You can also take in lovely natural scenery, including the tree said to have inspired “The Lorax.

Birch Aquarium

Learn about the science of oceanography at the Birch Aquarium (6.3 miles from the hotel). A rescued loggerhead sea turtle, leopard sharks, seahorses, and 5,000 fish are among the sea creatures you’ll see in sixty-plus habitats, alongside cutting-edge exhibitions on research by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Plus, more vistas of La Jolla’s scenery are visible from both inside and outside the building.

Shopping in La Jolla

Stroll along the city’s streets for a shopping scene unparalleled by most San Diego neighborhoods. There are trendy boutiques and high-end galleries throughout Girard Avenue and Prospect Street (3.5 miles from the hotel), a handful of men’s custom suit stores nearby, and seafront spots such as George’s on the Cove, where you can finish your shopping day with dinner and sunset views.
