San Diego’s Most Picturesque Piers

San Diego’s ocean piers are absolutely perfect for leisurely sunset strolls with a sweetie, bike rides, casting a fishing line, and simply enjoying our near-perfect year-round weather. Located just down the boardwalk, Crystal Pier has been an iconic coastal landmark since its 1927 dedication. The public fishing pier requires no license making it a perfect spot to hang out with a line in the water and is also known for its quaint onsite cottages. Enjoy watching surfers ride the waves before perusing the shops and restaurants that dot the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach boardwalk. Please note: the pier is closed at night, so plan accordingly!

Not just a pretty pier, the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier is a vital research facility and is an icon of UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Research aside, there is no shortage of stunning sunsets and opportunities to see some of San Diego’s native wildlife species. Grab some coffee at nearby cafés or enjoy a day exploring the Birch Aquarium.

Holding the titles of longest concrete pier in the world and second longest ocean pier in California is Ocean Beach Pier. Located on one of San Diego’s premier surf spots, the pier is a popular spot to walk, photograph, and simply take in the stunning ocean views. Enjoy a bite to eat at the Walking on Water Café to really bask in the moment. Please note that Ocean Beach Pier was damaged in the recent storms and may not be open during the time of your visit.

Small but picturesque, the Embarcadero Marina Park South Pier is in downtown San Diego and splits into a “T”-shaped terminus that stretches 300 feet. Enjoy views of downtown, Coronado Island, and the nearby convention center. The adjacent park has basketball courts, bike paths, dining, a band shell, and great fishing — no license required!

San Diego’s southernmost pier, Imperial Beach Pier is 1,491 feet long and provides sweeping views of the Coronado Islands, Point Loma peninsula, neighboring Mexico, and the majestic Pacific Ocean. The pier is home to the Outdoor Surf Museum which draws in crowds of surfers hoping to catch their next big wave. If surfing isn’t your thing, don’t worry — Imperial Beach Pier is the perfect place to catch the sunset.

While this pier is a bit up the coast, it is most definitely worth the drive! Originally constructed in 1888, the pier is the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll, go fishing, or watch the surfers.
