What to Do During Spring in San Diego

There’s truly no bad time to drop in on “America’s Finest City.” Our beautiful beaches, abundant attractions and year-round mild weather are always ready to welcome visitors. Even so, springtime may be one of the best times to plan a trip. Here’s just some of what you can look forward to during spring in San Diego

Pack For Our Perfect Weather

Although the weather here is always pretty favorable, the springtime conditions warrant a special mention. The days start getting longer and warmer, and evenings are mild and cool. Plus, the sunsets are absolutely spectacular. San Diego does get some April showers, although precipitation is still minimal — so we recommend bringing a light jacket along with your swimsuit. Expect temperatures in the high 60°F–70°F range.

Visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields

The breathtaking Carlsbad Flower Fields draw tens of thousands of visitors to a beautiful super-bloom of giant Tecolote ranunculus flowers every spring. Row after row of brilliant rainbow colors ripple across the landscape during the peak months. When visiting, guests are treated to not just the brilliant botanical display, but also a wide range of family-friendly activities (such as antique tractor rides, fruit picking, and much more).

Enjoy a Springtime Brunch

A delicious weekend brunch is a perennial favorite way to spend a mid-morning around here. Still, the season of Easter and Mother’s Day really sees peak popularity of this cherished tradition. Thankfully, San Diego is a place that doesn’t mess around when it comes to brunch! Our legendary local “foodie” culture has turned weekend meals into events. Want to find a great place to try? Check out this blog post from our friends at Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle for some suggestions on where to get started.

Check Out a Local Farmers Market

San Diego’s legendarily accommodating weather means our farmers markets are year-round community staples. And thanks to our large number of local farms, orchards, and greenhouses, the quality of what you’ll find is second-to-none. The excellent Pacific Beach Farmers Market runs on Tuesday afternoons, making it a convenient weekday stop. The goods available here run the gamut from the expected produce, prepared food, and preserved goods to smoothies, gourmet tamales, and even on-tap kombucha. The best part? It’s walking distance from our hotel!

Refresh On a Rooftop

There are countless ways to enjoy the weather while you’re here, but stepping up to one of San Diego’s rooftop bars and restaurants is a distinctly local way to soak up the atmosphere. What could be better than sipping a beverage and sampling some local flavor while you take in panoramic views of downtown, or the ocean? If you need some ideas of where to get started, this overview from our sister property The Dana on Mission Bay is the perfect primer.

San Diego Restaurant Week (March 26 – April 2, 2023)

Dining out is a pleasure, especially in a cultural melting pot like San Diego! More than 180 eateries will be participating in April’s Restaurant Week (from April 3–10), which will feature specials, discounts, and uniquely event-specific menu items that you simply can’t enjoy at any other time on the calendar. There’s no better time to get out there and enjoy some great taste! We’re especially excited to try Allegro’s Salmon Limoncello, the Short Rib Machaca Enchiladas from Blancos y Tequila, and CUSP’s Butterscotch Budino.

Gator By the Bay (May 11 – 14, 2023)

Gator By the Bay is San Diego’s answer to Mardi Gras, and it’s always an amazing celebration of food, music, and fun. This year’s shindig is shaping up to be a party for the ages, especially after pandemic-related postponements back-burnered the festivities during the previous two years. When you go, expect plenty of delicious Cajun and Creole food, 7 stages of Zydeco and Jazz, and the best bayou-style vibe this side of New Orleans.
