The 2016 Mermaid Half Marathon, 5k and 10k is a fun, flat race for women along San Diego's Mission Bay. It's a scenic course with views of the water and set mostly on closed roads. It takes place Saturday, Feb. 13, and starts are staggered, beginning at 7AM. All participating runners receive a chic race shirt, finisher medal and necklace as part of their swag goodies. Girls ages 6 to 12 are also welcome to participate in the 1.5-mile Mermaid Dash.
All of the races starts at South Shore Park, which is about a 15-minute drive from Pacific Terrace Hotel. Parking is available on a first come, first serve basis at the Rose Marie Starns/South Shore Parking Lot. When that lot fills, there is parking along Old SeaWorld Drive. All races finish at Tecolote Shores. The Half Marathon course goes around Fiesta Island to East Mission Bay Drive, then to DeAnza Cove Road, and across the Rose Creek footbridge to Crown Point Park.
Registration fees are $80 for the Half Marathon, $60 for the 10k, and $50 for the 5k. The fee goes up by $10 on race day. The Mermaid Dash is $15 online, $20 day of. On race day only cash or checks will be accepted. The event is part of the Mermaid Series, which has the mission of inspiring women to realize their full potential through fitness.
