As the mountains in Vermont are to skiing, the stellar waves and swells in San Diego are to surfing. As an integral player in solidifying surfing into the West Coast culture, San Diego has long been a mecca for the sport. Annual competitions are held here, and some of the best pro and amateur surfers have gotten their chops on San Diego’s coastline. We’re calling out some of the best surf shops in the area to get you ready to ride the waves or explore the local surf culture. (But maybe take a lesson first!)
1. Mission Surf Shop
This community-focused store is just a short walk from Pacific Terrace and has all the gear a surfer could dream of. It also has an intimate, family-run business feeling that greets every customer as if they’ve been coming here forever.
